  3.     The reference to the Agricultural Extension Service as a
  4. "pork-barrel" project in your story on budget cuts (NATION,
  5. Oct. 30) is unfair. We address, among other subjects, teen and
  6. preteen alcohol and other substance abuse, water quality,
  7. community revitalization and nutrition. Last summer, in one
  8. county alone, we saved farmers approximately $4.5 million by
  9. helping them decide how to cope with a plague of spider mites
  10. and grasshoppers.
